97.3 gram Nantan Meteorite, found in Nandan County, Guangxi in China.

The Nantan meteorite is believed to have fallen to Earth in 1516, but fragments began to be retrieved in 1958 when they were collected for smelting as part of the growing industrialisation of China. However the stories that tractors were made from Meteorite iron have proved to be an urban myth as the meteoric iron contains too much nickel for smelting!

Most fragments of this meteorite show strong signs of weathering and often a good coating of rust. The meteorite burst in the atmosphere and the pieces landed in what is known as a strewn field 28 kilometres long and around 8 kilometres wide which is located near the city of Nantan which is in Nandan County, Guangxi in China.

In excess of 9,500 kilograms of this meteorites have been recovered and the largest is around 2,000kg.

Nantan meteorite fragments offered for sale sometimes have an odour of diesel about them, this is because diesel oil is frequently used as a readily available preservative to slow the rusting process. We have been advised by our suppliers that a wipe with a cloth covered with an oil such as 3 in 1 or similar will preserve these meteorites well.
