Sponges belong to a group know as Porifera (meaning "pore bearer”). They are a multi-celled organism with a sack like body which are supported by small internal spines called spicules.

Raphidonema

This genus of sponge know as Raphidonema has an open structure widening from a narrow base, a vase-shaped look. The walls of the sponge are thick and porous, the pores being the tiny holes that can be seen on the sponge.

Found in rocks of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous age in Europe, Raphidonema could grow to around 50mm (2ichs in height)

This genus lived in shallow marine conditions, and was anchored to the seabed by its narrow base.
