Afrovenator (aff-ROW-ven-ah-tor) ("African Hunter”) is a type of Megalosauridae dinosaur. These carnivores first appeared in the Middle Jurassic, megalosaurids were among the first group of large theropod dinosaurs.


Afrovenator lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic Period on the Tiourarén Formation of Niger Sahara region Western Africa.


  

There has been only one near complete Afrovenator discovered and the size of this dinosaur has been debated but Afrovenator would have been an estimated 7/8 meters long (25/26 feet), standing about 1.9 meter (6.2 feet) tall and weighing around 790 kg (1,740 lb).
