Majungasaurus (mah-joon-gah-sore-us) was a carnivorous Dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period 84-71 Million Years Ago.

The name Majungasaurus means 'Majunga lizard' which comes from the location of fossils finds in Madagascar and the Province de Mahajanga location.

Majungasaurus was from a family of Dinosaurs know as abelisauirds, a group carnivorous Dinosaurs found in Africa, as well as South America and Southern Asia. These bipedal theropods differ from say the more well know predatory group such as Tyrannosaurs and species like T.Rex because of their short skulls, stocky hind limps and forelimbs that were very short and maybe didn’t have much function. Some also had a bone crest above their eyes.

Growing to about 7 meters (23 feet) long and standing about 1.83 meters (6ft) tall Majungasaurus is considered a medium-sized theropod but was an apex predator of its region because as it is today Madagascar was an island during the Late Cretaceous. Feeding on other Dinosaurs like Sauropods, there has also been discoveries of cannibalism between Majungasaurus. It is unknown if this was from actively hunting or just feeding scavenged carcasses. In today’s wildlife Komodo Dragons have been know to cannibalise the remains of their rivals when competing for carcasses and its suggested maybe Majungasaurus had similar behaviour.
