Produced from felsic lava, rich in lighter elements - silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, potassium.

It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows.

It is not a true mineral, sometimes classified as a mineraloid.
A mineraloid is a naturally occurring mineral-like substance that does not demonstrate crystallinity. Mineraloids possess chemical compositions for specific minerals.
