Opal is a hydrous silicon dioxide, without a crystalline structure.  They contain a variable amount of water, sometimes as much as 20%, varying in optical density from opaque to semi-transparent.  found in many different colours from colourless through white milky blue grey red pink yellow green brown and black.  Most of the World's Opal comes from Southern Australia though some pink opal is from Peru and Fire Opal from Mexico.

Tumble stones are so called because a number of stones of similar sizes are placed in a barrel which is rotated (tumbled) at a speed and after a time between 3 - 5 weeks the stones are polished from rough to smooth.
