Belemnites belong to a diverse group of cephalopods, which include the living squid, cuttlefish and octopus. The group is characterised by an internal, chambered shell enclosed entirely by soft, muscular tissues. Belemnites possessed strong, usually cylindrical, calcite guards that preserved well, and occur abundantly in Mesozoic (period) marine rocks.
