One of the greatest attributes given to Shungite metaphysically is its ability to shield or protect us from the various forms of electromagnetic radiation we are constantly exposed to in modern life.

Shungite is regarded as a very powerful, protective stone. It may offer protection from just about all forms of negativity allowing only beneficial forms of energy to penetrate our aura. As with a lot of black coloured stones, it is also a strong stone to use for grounding, assisting us to stay focused, maintaining our centre.

Shungite is thought to be billions of years old, it can only be found in one place on Earth - This is on the North side of Lake Onega in the republic of Karelia which is located in North West Russia. For many years this remarkable stone was known locally as Black Slate and takes its name from the nearest village to where it was first discovered, Shunga..

Shungite has been used in medical treatment since the early 18th-century. Peter the Great set up Russia's first spa in Karelia to make use of the water purifying properties of Shungite, which he had himself experienced. He also instigated its use in providing purified water for the Russian army. The anti-bacterial properties of Shungite have been confirmed by modern testing.

Shungite has been used since the middle of the 18th-century as a pigment for paint, and is currently sold under the names "carbon black" or "Shungite natural black".

In its purest form, Shungite is known as Grade 1, Elite or Noble. Grade 1 Shungite is a black, lustrous semi metallic looking mineraloid and is almost 99% by weight made of organic carbon.

Shungite known as grade 2 and grade 3. These have a lower percentage of organic carbon which may be between 30 and 70%.

Here at London Fossils Crystals I sell a wide range of Tumble Stones.

Tumble stones are so called because a number of stones of similar sizes are placed in a barrel which is rotated (tumbled) at a speed and after a time between 3 - 5 weeks the stones are polished from rough to smooth.

(The Tumble stones we sell, have not been tumbled by ourselves)
