In it's distinctive midnight blue colour "Blue” Goldstone is a type of glittering glass made in a furnace with a low oxygen reducing atmosphere.

Goldstone is actually a man-made stone. It’s sparkle is normally due to flecks of copper, though cobalt or manganese can be substituted for the copper. When this is done the resulting sparkles have a more silvery appearance and are suspended in a strongly coloured matrix of the corresponding ionic colour resulting in Blue Goldstone and also Purple Goldstone.

There are a few folklore stories on the origins of this man made crystal. One being that sometime during the early 1800’s an Italian monk was making stained glass in his monastery and he accidentally spilled some copper fillings into the molten glass, resulting in Goldstone as we know it being made. A second also in Italy in which at a glass factory,on the Island of Murano, molten copper was spilled into molten glass and accidentally created Goldstone. A third is that Goldstone was created by alchemists chasing the ancient quest of trying to turn iron into gold.
